Behavior
- Be courteous
- Be responsible
- Be safe!
We begin each year learning that if we observe these three simple rules we won't need any other rules! We discuss what it means to be courteous, responsible and safe and then use specific situations to decide which rule it exemplifies or which rule it breaks.
How the Library Works Students are encouraged to develop personal responsibility as they check their books in and pre-sort them onto the appropriate shelves. Just as the grocery store has a self check-out isle, our library does too! Students learn to check themselves out after they have selected their new books when they come by themselves during OPEN CHECK-OUT. We want students to become independent life-long learners and lovers of literature.
We do not expect children to be silent, but we do ask that they observe what others are doing and be respectful of them by behaving in ways that allow for many simultaneous uses.
Overdue or Missing Items If your student has an overdue book, s/he is reminded during each visit. We ask if they know where a book might be or if they think they returned it. Usually books turn up. Sometimes a student has brought a book back, but failed to check it in, and it gets shelved while it is still checked out in his/her name. Sometimes the book gets mixed into the classroom library and is found at the end of the year.
If your student loses or damages a book, he will be responsible for replacing it. We will communicate about the book so that you know it is missing, and decide on a course of action. You will be asked to pay for or replace lost or damaged books at the end of the year. If you have questions call the librarian 353-2066 ext.8.
Checking out Books Your student may check out two books unless the teacher specifies otherwise. The books circulate for two weeks. One book should be a title for which an Accelerated Reader test exits. The other selection may be anything they wish to read (a book just for fun)! That means the book may be too difficult for them to read or it may be too easy! It is their choice. We do not always understand why a child chooses a particular book, but we believe in thier right to choose.
Students may also check out a magazine to take home and read overnight! These are returned the next morning and are kept in large manilla envelopes to keep the covers intact. Parents or guardians may also check out books under their student's name. When this happens -- your student can still have two books that are books of his/her choice.
