Westmeade Library's Vision Statement

The flags of 33 different countries hang in our gymn. Our student body is made up of students from many of these countries. The
flags remind us that this is a small world after all! Though we have many faces we are one family. Our goal in the library is to help students live together in a global learning community. In the process they will learn

  • to love literature, and let it make us laugh, cry and think
  • to be curious, and think critically,
  • to access, use and evaluate information
  • to respect each other, our library, its contents, and different points of view
  • to work hard and enjoy the satisfaction that hard work brings!
  • to love learning, and to become "life-long learners."
  • Programs sponsored by the Library

    Book Fairs
Our Scholastic Book Fairs (to a year) sponsor the Accelerated Reader Program, paying for the subscription cost of $1700 a year and the incentives.

    Student Check-Out
Our library has two periods of open check out each day when any student may come to the library.  Students may check out two books. One book must be at their reading level so they can to practice reading with you in the evening.  Research shows how important it is for each student to select their own books and we encourage them to choose whatever book they really want for their second choice.  You may wonder why we let a child check out Harry Potter books in 1st grade --- now you know.  We may not always understand why a student chooses a second book, but that choice is theirs to make unchallenged.

    AR Books and their Rewards
These books are known as AR (Accelerated Reader) books.  Students may take tests on them and earn points.  Students set their AR reading goals with their teachers and when they meet these AR goals they get to come to an AR party and win prizes for the efforts!

    Information Literacy and Media Literacy
Please take a moment to check out the important concepts of Information Literacy and Media Literacy to understand more about the Library's program.

    Overdues and Fines
We don't charge fines.  Each time students visit the library they are reminded about any books that may be overdue.  We choose to spend our time in instruction and reading encouragement sending out overdues at the conclusion of each 9-week period.

Our library is often a noisy chaotic place where the only real rule is to be courteous to those around you.  We are happy when children respond to literature with excitement and we do not like the old image of a librarian with a pencil in her bun insisting on SHHHH QUIET!

We believe we do a good job when children are excited about literature and learning.  When this happens we know they are developing good attitudes toward lifelong learning.
